Steel construction of the A380 assembly hall, Toulouse-Blagnac

KEY INFORMATION

The construction of the final assembly line for the Airbus A380 in Toulouse has been entrusted to Castel & Fromaget, which has set up a single Design Office (for the steel structure) common to the consortium, located directly on site.

The structure, designed for the assembly of the new A 380 jumbo jet, weighs 200 kg/m² and is designed to be isostatic.

Its hoisting construction has the advantage of facilitating handling, assembly, roofing and equipment work at working heights of 15 to 20 m.

The main building, known as the "Arch" because of its plan shape, comprises 1 destocking hall, 2 assembly halls and 6 buildings of 10,000 m² each designed by Castel & Fromaget:

3 equipment and test halls
3 construction and testing halls

To the south of the "Arch" are the outdoor test areas and aircraft delivery areas for airlines. Finally, on either side of the 'Arch' are additional halls and other supporting buildings.

In 2006, the Airbus A380 Assembly Hall won a prize in the Industrial Buildings category of the PBO competition (Most Beautiful Steel Construction Works) organised every two years by the Syndicat de la Construction Métallique de France.
